Unicorn Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 15, 2026

Unicorn is a real-time translation chat app operated by Induction Ventures ("we", "us"). This policy explains what data the Unicorn iOS application, App Clip, and related services (the "Service") collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We do not sell your personal information.

1. What we collect

Information you provide

  • Display name. Optional; shown to people you chat with.
  • Email. Optional; used to link your account across devices and to contact you about the Service. We verify it via a one-time code.
  • Voice enrollment sample. A short greeting you record so the app can distinguish your voice from others in the same recording. The voice fingerprint (a numeric embedding) is generated on your device.
  • Chat messages. Audio you record, transcriptions, and translations are stored on our servers so all participants in a thread can see them. Messages are ephemeral by design: a message is only available in a thread for 24 hours after it is sent, and expired messages are deleted from our active systems on a rolling basis.
  • View-once photos. A photo sent as "view once" is held on our servers only until the recipient views it (or the sender deletes it), at which point the image data is permanently destroyed. We keep no copy, and the app never writes received view-once photos to device storage. Screenshots of conversations are blocked at the operating-system level (protected content is excluded from captures).

Information collected automatically

  • Account identifiers. An anonymous auth token and a numeric user ID, created when you first open the app.
  • Device locale and country. Used to pick your default base language.
  • Approximate location. When you create a new chat, we use your device location to suggest the local language. You can deny the permission and pick a language manually.
  • Subscription status. If you subscribe to Smooth Talker, Apple sends us a signed receipt confirming the entitlement. We do not receive your payment details.

2. How we use it

  • To operate the Service: route messages between chat participants, transcribe speech, translate text, and deliver audio.
  • To distinguish speakers in the same recording (the voice fingerprint runs on-device).
  • To secure the Service against abuse and fraud.
  • To respond to your support requests.
  • To meet legal obligations.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not currently run third-party analytics inside the app.

3. Where data is processed

Two computations happen on your device and never reach our servers in raw form:

  • Voice fingerprinting — via the open-source FluidAudio model.
  • Speech-to-text transcription — via the open-source Whisper model.

The resulting transcript and the translated text are sent to our servers so they can be delivered to the people in your chat.

4. Who we share it with

  • Other participants in your chats. Messages you send are visible to everyone in that thread.
  • Apple. Subscription billing, App Store receipts, and push notifications are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.
  • Translation provider. Translated text is generated by a third-party machine-translation service we contract with. We send only the text to be translated and the language pair; we do not send your name, account ID, or other identifiers.
  • Infrastructure providers. Cloud hosting, databases, caching, and delivery services that store data on our behalf under written data-processing agreements.
  • Law enforcement. When we are legally compelled, or to protect rights, safety, or the integrity of the Service.

We do not sell or rent your data.

5. Retention

Chat messages and translations are kept while your thread exists so participants can scroll back. When you delete a thread, its messages are deleted from our active systems within 30 days. When you delete your account, your profile, voice fingerprint, and identifiable chat history are removed within 30 days, subject to backups that age out on a rolling schedule. We may retain aggregate or de-identified data indefinitely.

6. Your choices and rights

  • Delete your account. From inside the app, or by emailing yo@unicorn.travel.
  • Revoke microphone or location access in iOS Settings at any time.
  • Manage your subscription in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
  • Access, correction, or portability. Email us and we'll respond within 30 days.
  • California and EEA/UK residents have the rights described in Section 8.

7. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. Regional rights

California (CCPA/CPRA). You have the right to know what personal information we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and to opt out of "sale" or "sharing" (we do neither).

EEA, UK, and Switzerland (GDPR/UK GDPR). Our legal bases are performance of a contract (operating the Service), legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention), and consent (microphone, location). You have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, and you may complain to your local supervisory authority.

To exercise any of these rights, email yo@unicorn.travel.

9. Security

Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit (TLS). Stored data is access-controlled. No system is perfectly secure; please choose a unique email and keep your device locked.

10. International transfers

We are based in the United States. If you use the Service from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and processed in the US under appropriate safeguards.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be highlighted in the app or by email.
